Visit North Kerry

Located between the Shannon Estuary's embrace of the Wild Atlantic, the heather-hued slopes of Slieve Luachra and the dramatic peaks of the Dingle Peninsula, is North Kerry. This is a varied landscape of ancient deciduous woods, rich pastures, meadows, extensive sandy beaches, dramatic cliffs and sea stacks and boglands resonant with lark song and cuckoo calls. This scenic tapestry is further enriched by its amazing survival of medieval architecture in castles, tower houses, abbeys, friaries, churches and holy wells that testify to its vibrant Hiberno-Norman heritage. The culture still echoes in the music, song, poetry, literature, history, folklore, cuisine and sports of the local population.

Welcome to North Kerry where you can experience the wealthy heritage of this region of the ancient Kingdom of Ciar (from which Kerry derives its name). Between 1329 and 1585 the area was known as the Liberty of Kerry within the Desmond Palatinate that extended into County Limerick, West Kerry and North Cork. The ruling dynasty, the Geraldines (FitzGeralds, FitzMaurices, FitzGibbons and FitzPierces) and their associates such as the O'Connors-Kerry, O'Hanrahans, O'Scanlons, Sheehys, Shanahans, Enrights, Brownes, Brosnans, McElligotts and Cantillons, shaped the cultural, social, political and economic development of this region through their commercial, diplomatic and cultural-religious contacts with France, Flanders, Spain and Portugal over many centuries. This formed the material and cultural heritage that survives in the landscape and the society of their many descendants in North Kerry today.
